As a massive fan of the Rest Is History podcasts with Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland, I was inspired to illustrate one of their career highlights: an epic, 3-part series on the life and times of Ronald Reagan. No-one asked me to – in fact, several people told me to stop drawing bloody Reagans all the time – but I couldn’t resist.
The final layout is a mash-up of my usual scribing style and a good, old-fashioned comic strip. It takes us from Ronnie’s raw beginnings in the heart of the mid-West, through his Hollywood years and complicated love-life and all the way to the top job with its perils, scandals and savage peanuts. Hopefully the illustration captures the details of the story and the spirit of playful fascination with which it was told. If you ever wondered what Lemuel Boulware looked like, it is invaluable…
