Pictures to save the planet!

Earlier this year DEFRA‘s Bristol office held a workshop to explore how graphic storytelling could be used to help communicate the realities of creating a net-zero carbon world by 2050.

I was invited to speak on the subject of turning information into graphic content and also to capture the day’s events and fellow speakers with some good old, furious scribing (see below). The brilliant Dr Genevieve Lively, a Narratologist and Turing fellow at Bristol Uni, helped us look more closely at graphic language around the topic of the zero-carbon future. Meanwhile, Hull-based penman and graphics wizard Gareth Sleightholme gave us a whistlestop tour through the nuts and bolts of comic literacy.

The day was rounded off with some group work creating original comic stories around the key topics of sustainability, migration, commerce and exploding cats. Some great discussion points and hopefully a timely eye-opener in the whole picture v 1000 words debate…
