In some parts of the UK, patients are being denied access to joint replacement surgery purely on the basis of a high BMI. This is despite national guidelines designed to prevent such exclusion. A research project was commissioned to look into this – funded by the National Institute for Healthcare Research (NIHR) in conjunction with the University of Bristol.
